Stainless steels are often discounted as suitable materials for the built environment as they are seen as high-cost materials. They do however, when correctly selected for each application, offer the ability to lightweight structures with no loss of structural integrity. Furthermore, they can offer corrosion prevention in locations where corrosion is often invisible which thereby ensures ongoing structural and/or operational integrity. Description
This course explores the advantages of using stainless steel in construction, focusing on its durability, corrosion resistance, and sustainability. Students will learn about different stainless steel grades, their applications in structural projects, and their role in reducing maintenance costs and life cycle emissions. The course covers corrosion types, myths about stainless steel, and real-world case studies, illustrating the material’s contribution to a circular economy and long-term resilience in modern infrastructure projects.
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Identify the historical use and benefits of stainless steel in construction.
- Recognize the different types and grades of stainless steel and their applications.
- Recognize the role of stainless steel in promoting sustainability and the circular economy.
- Comprehend the types of corrosion and how stainless steel can minimize corrosion-related damage.
- Analyze cost savings and maintenance benefits provided by stainless steel in long-term structural projects.
