Description
In 2024, on average, every tonne of steel produced led to the emission of 2.18 tonnes of CO2e (scope 1, 2, and 3). In the same year, 1,886 million tonnes (Mt) of steel were produced, and total emissions from our sector were of the order of 4.1 billion tonnes CO2e (75% of which are direct emissions). These emissions represent 7% – 8% of global anthropogenic GHG emissions.
To deliver emission reductions at a time when production is increasing will require all of us in the industry to innovate and to create and deploy radically different steelmaking technologies with incredible speed. Steelmakers will be mandated to fundamentally change steel production processes and to urgently meet climate goals by applying technological innovation.
Along with worldsteel’s Open Forum, the Breakthrough Technology Conference, is one of two regular events that come under the umbrella of Climate Action.
The conference provides a platform for our technical community to network, exchange and explore the technology options that will be necessary to transform our industry.
