Description
Introduction
The steel industry is a critical sector facing an increasingly significant challenge. Going forward, steel producers need to assess, evaluate, and decide on a technologically and economically viable way to decrease their carbon footprint.
While there are a number of technology options available to the industry, hydrogen will play a significant role in enabling the deployment of innovative solutions to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and circular economy.
Hydrogen is not only a key enabler for the industry shift to net-zero, but also a substance that is already present in many processes and equipment, which might eventually require retrofitting or upscaling.
The hydrogen safety challenge ahead of the steel industry requires mutual understanding and clear priorities (e.g., education and skills) to be considered in conjunction with all stakeholders.
