Implementation of welded joints between bars: articulation versus embedment
Implementation of welded joints between bars: articulation versus embedment

steelTalks is a monthly series on topics of interest to the global steel community. The lectures are presented in a webinar format with a guest lecturer. The orientation of the presentation is conceptual, paying special attention to design aspects, avoiding the numerical part.

Description

The join of the structural bars from hot rolled profiles can be done by welding.

This connection between bars, depending on the geometry of the sections to be joined, may have specific requirements regarding their behaviour in the face of the stresses that act on them, and may behave, due to design needs, as a joint or as an embedment, or in the intermediate case as a semi-embedment.

In order to implement these conditions, it is convenient to review some RMM (Resistance of Materials) topics, in relation to stress distributions in cases of bending and shear stresses and translate them to the specific case of welding.

The orientation of the presentation is conceptual, paying special attention to design aspects, avoiding the numerical part.
