Description
The first question that could appear in your mind is: How did the earlier blacksmiths know the temperature that steel should have to temper? Or how did they know that heating the steel with carbon atmosphere could carburise the steel? The answer is experimentation. That was the reason why they discovered the methodologies. In this module the history of carburised steels will be introduced, together with an explanation of quenching and tempering. At the end of that section, the temper temperature is described.
Then, a piece of history is used to explain the process to make a tool and why that tool has improved its mechanical properties.
What you will learn
- Describe the history of general carburising.
