Surface Hardening by Carburising

Full Code

APP0302210

Module Type

E-learning

Description

When you want to make a surface hardening by carburising it is important to know how deep the carburising layer is. This depth will determine the time, temperature and kind of carburising environment that you need to control during the process. In this module the aim of carburising steel will be mentioned. Then, the process of carburisation and how tempering affects hardening will be described in detail. The parameters to control the carburisation process will be introduced. Finally, cyanide like a carburising method and the microstructure of a case hardened steel will be explained.

What you will learn

- Explain the aim of carburising and the carburising process,
- Interpret how the tempering temperature affects hardness;
- Describe how the carburising environment is produced;
- Outline the advantages and disadvantages of surface hardening.
