Description

Steels with high hardenability are needed for large high strength components -such as large extruder screws for injection moulding of polymers, pistons for rock breakers, mine shaft supports, aircraft undercarriages- and also for small high precision components, such as die-casting moulds, drills and presses for stamping coins. In this module the mechanical properties of Medium Carbon Steels will be described. Then, the transformation characteristics of Medium Carbon Steels will be studied trough the hardenability of Medium Carbon Steels, CCT behaviour and the effect of alloy additions on hardenability.

What you will learn

- Explain the mechanical properties of Medium Carbon Steels;
- Calculate the Ms temperature and explain the transformation characteristics of Medium Carbon Steels;
- Outline the hardness variations with the composition of Medium Carbon Steels;
- Describe how the CCT behaviour of Medium Carbon Steels is affected by steel composition;
- Interpret how the alloy additions affect the hardenability of steel.
