What you will learn
• Identify the major groups of nickel alloys and understand how their physical and metallurgical properties influence welding performance.
• Apply proper welding practices—including joint preparation, cleanliness, heat tint removal, and contamination control—to ensure high-quality, corrosion-resistant welds.
• Select appropriate welding processes and filler metals for solid-solution, precipitation-hardening, and dissimilar-metal nickel alloy welds.
• Recognise welding-related defects (porosity, cracking, embedded iron, crevices) and implement measures to prevent them.
• Understand material procurement considerations, especially for nickel alloy castings, including inspection, heat treatment, and repair welding.
• Incorporate design principles that improve corrosion performance in tanks, piping, and other equipment, including choices of weld geometry, overlays, linings, and clad materials.
• Ensure compliance with qualification codes (ASME, AWS) for welding procedures and welder performance.
