Description
Boron is the most common ‘metaloid’ used to make tools, shaft truck, etc. Boron is added to unalloyed and low alloyed steels to enhance the hardness level through enhancement hardenability. Boron added to high-speed-cut steels enhances their cutting performance but reduces their forging qualities. In this module the boron inclusions in steel will be studied and the improved mechanical properties will be introduced.
Then, the process route for the manufacture of cold forged parts will be presented.
Finally, the applications and identifications of boron steel will be showed.
What you will learn
- Explain how boron affects steels;
- Detail how hardenability is affected by boron addition;
- Describe the fabrication process of boron steel;
- Identify boron steels applications.
