Description
Short description:
Alloy-Microstructure Link: Predict steel outcomes via phase diagrams, diffusion calculations, and alloying effects in this self-paced module.
Long description:
This module provides an in-depth exploration of how steel’s microstructure evolves through controlled alloying and thermal treatments. Learners examine the role of raw materials and BOS (Basic Oxygen Steelmaking) elements in shaping mechanical properties, guided by solubility rules and Fe phase diagrams. Through interactive diagrams and analysis tasks, they assess diffusion and transformation mechanisms, including diffusional and displacive transformations. The module also covers ferrite growth types and transformation rates, reinforced with practical calculation exercises using Arrhenius and Einstein equations. Participants will interpret CCT diagrams and gain expertise in predicting microstructure outcomes based on temperature and cooling conditions.
What you will learn
- Explain how raw materials and alloying influence the microstructure and properties of steel.
- Apply solubility rules to predict the behavior of elements in Fe alloys.
