What you will learn
• Define key fire design parameters, including fire load density ($q_f$), rate of heat release (RHR), and standard versus natural fire temperature-time curves.
• Analyze how elevated temperatures impact the mechanical yield strength ($K_s$) and stiffness ($K_e$) of structural steel.
• Evaluate the influence of section thickness (thermal mass) and surrounding soil/groundwater conditions on the thermal response of a sheet pile wall.
• Differentiate between active fire protection measures (e.g., automatic sprinklers, smoke detectors) and passive solutions (e.g., intumescent coatings, sprayed insulation, fire-resistant boards, concrete encasement).
• Calculate the reduced plastic moment resistance ($M_{rd}$) of a sheet pile cross-section at high temperatures using specified reduction factors.
• Select appropriate design and simulation tools (such as the two-stage thermal/structural finite element software SARI or the simplified six-step verification process) for underground structure applications.
