Surface Treatments
Full Code

Module Type
E-learning
Description
A component which undergoes wear, for example a gear, is required to have a hard surface but a tough core. Surface treatments can provide this kind of bilateral characteristic.
Surface treatment creates a thin but hard surface layer on a softer and tougher core, which produces a material capable of withstanding stress and wear. In this module the surface hardening treatment will be introduced. The first treatment explained will be Carburising. Its advantages, processes and process simulation will be developed.
Then, the Nitriding process along with its advantages and methods will be introduced. Finally, Induction Hardening will be detailed.
What you will learn
- Influence and improve the characteristics of materials;
- Describe different surface treatment methods;
- Explain the main chemical reactions which take place during these surface treatment methods;
- List the parameters that influence the process.
