Description
Short description:
Focuses on the identification and analysis of steel microstructures using metallographic techniques.
Long description:
This module provides learners with the foundational skills to evaluate steel microstructures resulting from various heat treatments. Emphasis is placed on metallographic preparation techniques, microscope usage, and the identification of key structures such as ferrite, pearlite, martensite, bainite, and retained austenite. Learners will study the correlation between processing history and microstructural outcomes and practice interpreting etched samples to assess treatment effectiveness and predict material behavior.
What you will learn
- Prepare steel samples for metallographic analysis using standard sectioning, mounting, and etching procedures.
- Operate optical microscopes to identify primary microstructures in heat-treated steel.
- Distinguish between ferrite, pearlite, martensite, bainite, and retained austenite in prepared specimens.
- Correlate microstructure features with heat treatment processes and mechanical properties.
- Document findings with photomicrographs and prepare analysis reports using standard terminology.
