Description
Life cycle assessment (LCA) looks at the whole life cycle of a product system from cradle to grave. This covers extraction of raw materials, manufacturing of a product like a car, use of the product, and end-of-life.
These processes each have an environmental burden and life cycle assessment allows you to look at the total of these burdens. LCA allows an investigator to look at a product system and evaluate the environmental burdens of alternative solutions.
An LCA study includes four phases: Goal and Scope Definition; Life Cycle Inventory; Life Cycle Impact Assessment; and Life Cycle Interpretation.
What you will learn
- Describe the value of life cycle assessment;
- Share an example of how life cycle assessment is used; and
- Name the phases of life cycle assessment as prescribed by international standards.
