Description
The steps necessary to complete a LCA study are identified in the goal and scope definition phase. First, the goal, or purpose, of the study is stated.
The stated goal, whether to support an ecolabel, inform government legislation, or other purpose, will affect decisions in defining the scope of the study. Factors to be considered in the scope of the study include the product system boundary, the temporal boundary, technology, data quality required, functional unit, how allocation is to be managed, and environmental impact categories.
The functional unit is of particular importance when comparing product system alternatives as each alternative should deliver the same function.
