Description

The inventory analysis phase of a life cycle assessment study refines the original system boundary decided in the scope definition.
The unit processes within the system boundary are studied and cut-off criteria are used to decide which inputs and outputs are included, as otherwise a study could be unlimited in its scope. Some unit processes may have more than one product output. In this case it may be necessary to assign inputs and outputs to the product of interest by means of allocation, or to avoid allocation by expanding the product system under study.
This phase of the study takes the most time as it involves collecting the data, the inputs and outputs of each unit process to meet the requirements of the goal and scope definition.

What you will learn

- Recognise the concept of unit processes within a selected system boundary;
- Define elementary, input and output flows;
- Express why cut-off criteria are required; and
- Identify examples of cut-off criteria.
