Description
Depending on the chemical composition or manufacturing method, the steels achieve a certain degree of hardness. When it is machined under the same conditions, the carbide insert will have a useful life depending on the degree of hardness of the steel. In that sense, it is important to know this property to optimally select the cutting insert that will allow to increase its useful life. But, what is Hardness? In this module the definition of hardness will be explained. Then, different methods to measure this property will be presented. In addition, the most popular tests to measure it will be shown. Finally, different applications of the results of the hardness tests will be evaluated.
