Test Piece Preparation
Full Code

Module Type

Description
In this module you will prepare 'virtual' test pieces for Tensile, Impact Toughness and Hardness Testing.
To do this, you will cut a sample from a length of rolled steel plate. Then, you will cut out test coupons, from which you will machine the test pieces. It is also essential that you properly identify each test coupon, so that you know its orientation compared to the original plate when it comes to testing.
After completing this task, you can proceed to determine the Tensile, Impact Toughness and Hardness Properties of this steel, and decide whether it meets the requirements of the American Bureau of Shipping standards that you have studied in the previous module.
What you will learn
- Outline the procedure to test piece preparation;
- Take a steel product sampling;
- Distinguish variation of properties in a steel strip; in a steel plate, and in a heat treated bar;
- Identify the directionality of properties within a steel product and the different types of test pieces for mechanical property determinations;
- Evaluate the place of sample identification & test piece location & orientation.
