Description
Formability is an important property for strip steels used for beverage cans, automotive panels, domestic appliance casings, etc.
Unfortunately, "formability" cannot be simply defined using a single material property, it is dependent on the particular forming process (e.g. deep-drawing, stretch forming, etc.) and on the sheet thickness. In this module we will compare deep drawing and stretch forming processes. The use of circle grid analysis to create forming limit diagrams is then described. In addition, the limit graph for plastic deformation will be explained. Finally, the springback concept will be introduced.
What you will learn
- Interpret the concept of formability and stretch forming;
- Calculate deep drawing;
- Explain the circle grid analysis; the factors that affect stretch-formability and the springback effect;
- Apply Nakazima tests and forming limit diagrams.
